Study notes

Joseph’s brothers see that their father favors him above all of them, and they hate him. When Joseph comes to them, they strip off his tunic and throw him into a pit, and he is later pulled out, sold for twenty silver to Ishmaelites, and brought to Egypt.

The chapter opens with

Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a ketonet passim.

Genesis 37:3 (KoS)

Note · Translation Ketonet is a tunic. Passim is not explained in this codex. Later English has guessed many colors, long sleeves, or an ankle-length cut. None of those glosses is in the Hebrew, so none is printed. The phrase is kept.

Notice and discuss

Read each passage, then think about the question on your own or talk it over with others. No answers are collected.

  1. What questions do Joseph’s brothers ask him, and what reasons does the text give for their hatred?

His brothers said to him, “Will you really reign over us? Will you really rule us?” And they hated him still more, because of his dreams and because of his words.

    Genesis 37:8 (KoS)

  2. What does Reuben tell his brothers to do with Joseph, and what does the text say was his purpose?

Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him,” so that he might rescue him from their hands and restore him to his father.

    Genesis 37:22 (KoS)

  3. When his children try to comfort him, what does Joseph’s father say he will do?

All his sons and all his daughters rose to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, “I will go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” And his father wept for him.

    Genesis 37:35 (KoS)
