Study notes

Yahweh strikes down every firstborn in Egypt at midnight, but he passes over the homes of Israel’s sons. Israel then crosses on dry ground through the split sea, and when Pharaoh’s army goes in after them, the water flows back over the chariots and riders.

From Exodus 12:27 (KoS), Exodus 12:29 (KoS), Exodus 14:21–22 (KoS), Exodus 14:26–28 (KoS).

Notice and discuss

Read each passage, then think about the question on your own or talk it over with others. No answers are collected.

  1. What are the people told to do with the hyssop and the blood, and where must they stay until morning?

Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out the door of his house until morning.

    Exodus 12:22 (KoS)

Note · Translation Ezov is printed “hyssop,” the plant the Hebrew names. Saf is the basin holding the blood.

  2. When the sons of Israel see Egypt marching after them, what do they say to Moses?

Pharaoh came near. The sons of Israel lifted their eyes, and look, Egypt was marching after them. They were very afraid, and the sons of Israel cried out to Yahweh. They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you took us to die in the wilderness? What is this you have done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the thing we told you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone, and let us serve Egypt’? It is better for us to serve Egypt than to die in the wilderness.”

    Exodus 14:10–12 (KoS)

  3. What does Yahweh show Moses, and what happens after it is thrown into the water?

He cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh showed him a tree. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There he set him a statute and a judgment, and there he tested him.

    Exodus 15:25 (KoS)
