Study notes
Eleazar the priest, Joshua, and the tribal leaders divide the land of Canaan among the tribes by lot, and Joshua gives Hebron to Caleb. Yahweh has Joshua tell Israel to set up cities of refuge for anyone who kills a person by mistake, and Yahweh gives Israel the land and rest on every side.
From Joshua 14:1–5 (KoS), Joshua 14:13–15 (KoS), Joshua 20:1–3 (KoS), Joshua 21:43–45 (KoS).

Joshua was old, advanced in days, and Yahweh said to him, You yourself have grown old. You have come into days, and very much of the land remains to be taken. This is the land that remains: all the districts of the Philistines, and all the Geshurite, from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, as far as the border of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: the five lords of the Philistines, the Gazite, the Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gittite, and the Ekronite, and the Avvim. On the south, all the land of the Canaanite, and Mearah, which belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorite, and the land of the Gebalite, and all Lebanon toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad under Mount Hermon as far as Lebo-hamath, all who live in the hill country from Lebanon as far as Misrephoth-maim, all the Sidonians. I myself will drive them out from before the sons of Israel. Only assign it to Israel as an inheritance, as I commanded you. Now divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
Note · Translation Sarnim are the lords of the Philistine cities. The Shihor is the water named on the side of Egypt.
Note · Translation Lebo-hamath is the entrance of Hamath, the northern point named in the line.

What does Caleb say about his age and his strength, and what does he ask Joshua to give him?
The sons of Judah drew near to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, You know the word that Yahweh spoke to Moses, the man of God, about me and about you at Kadesh-barnea. I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of Yahweh, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to scout the land, and I brought him back word as it was in my heart. My brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, but I fully followed Yahweh my God. Moses swore on that day, saying, If the land your foot has walked on is not yours, and your sons’, as an inheritance forever, because you fully followed Yahweh my God. Now, look, Yahweh has kept me alive, as he spoke, these forty-five years since Yahweh spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. Now, look, I am today eighty-five years old. I am still as strong today as on the day Moses sent me. As my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war, and for going out and for coming in. Now give me this hill country, of which Yahweh spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that the Anakim are there, and the cities are great and fortified. Perhaps Yahweh will be with me, and I will drive them out, as Yahweh spoke.
Note · Translation Milleti acharei is “I filled up after,” to follow all the way.

What do the daughters of Zelophehad say to Eleazar, Joshua, and the chiefs, and what are they given?
Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh had no sons, only daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They drew near before Eleazar the priest, before Joshua son of Nun, and before the chiefs, saying, Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers. So he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father, according to the mouth of Yahweh.

What must a person who flees to a city of refuge do at the city gate, and how long must he stay there?
He shall flee to one of these cities, stand at the entrance of the city gate, and speak his words in the ears of the elders of that city. They shall gather him into the city to themselves, give him a place, and he shall live with them. If the redeemer of the blood chases after him, they shall not hand the killer over into his hand, because he struck his neighbor without knowing, and he had not been hating him since yesterday and the day before. He shall live in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the great priest who is in those days. Then the killer shall return and come to his city and to his house, to the city from which he fled.
