Study notes

Joseph’s brothers come from Canaan to buy food, and Joseph recognizes them but acts like a stranger and talks to them harshly. Later Judah asks to stay behind as a slave in place of the boy, and Joseph then reveals that he is their brother, the one they sold into Egypt.

From Genesis 42:7 (KoS), Genesis 44:18 (KoS), Genesis 44:33 (KoS), Genesis 45:4 (KoS).

Notice and discuss

Read each passage, then think about the question on your own or talk it over with others. No answers are collected.

  1. What do the brothers say to one another about their guilt and the trouble they are in?

They said to one another, “Truly we are guilty because of our brother. We saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not listen. That is why this distress has come on us.”

    Genesis 42:21 (KoS)

  2. What does Judah promise his father about the boy, and what will he bear if he fails?

Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will get up and go, so that we may live and not die, we and you and our little ones. I myself will be surety for him. From my hand you may require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, I will bear the blame before you all my days.

    Genesis 43:8–9 (KoS)

  3. What does Joseph tell his brothers not to feel, and what reason does he give?

Now do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me ahead of you to preserve life.

    Genesis 45:5 (KoS)
