Study notes

In a night vision, God tells Israel he need not fear going down to Egypt, and later Joseph meets his father in Goshen and weeps on his neck. Pharaoh lets the family live in Goshen, and when Israel is near death, he asks Joseph not to bury him in Egypt.

Notice and discuss

Read each passage, then think about the question on your own or talk it over with others. No answers are collected.

  1. What three promises are made to Jacob in this verse about Egypt and about Joseph?

I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I myself will also bring you up again, and Joseph’s hand will close your eyes.”

    Genesis 46:4 (KoS)

  2. How does Jacob describe the years of his life to Pharaoh, and how does he compare them with his fathers’ years?

Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty. Few and hard have been the years of my life, and they have not reached the years of the lives of my fathers in the days of their sojourning.”

    Genesis 47:9 (KoS)

  3. What do the people ask Joseph to buy, and what do they ask him to give them?

Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our ground? Buy us and our ground for bread, and we and our ground will be slaves to Pharaoh. Give us seed, so that we may live and not die, and so that the ground is not desolate.”

    Genesis 47:19 (KoS)
