Chapter 2: Cain, Abel, and the First City
Study notes, questions and the Bible passages that Kingdoms of Scripture Chapter 2 covers, as the game’s chapter map shows them. Read the passages first in the Kingdoms of Scripture Bible, the text the game quotes: the game’s choices, maps and staging are reconstructions, not scripture. This page is not a church lesson and adds no doctrine.

Study notes
When Yahweh looks to Abel’s gift but not to Cain’s, Cain grows very angry, and later he kills his brother Abel in the field. Cain leaves Yahweh’s presence and settles in Nod, east of Eden, and Adam’s wife later bears another son, Seth.
From Genesis 4:3–5 (KoS), Genesis 4:8 (KoS), Genesis 4:16 (KoS), Genesis 4:25–26 (KoS).
These notes and questions are original study helps written for this site, not scripture. The verses shown with each question are quoted from the Kingdoms of Scripture Bible.

- Title
- Cain, Abel, and the First City
- Bible passages
- Genesis 4:1–4:26
- Read in the Kingdoms of Scripture Bible
- The chapter opens with
If you do well, is there not a lifting? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are the one to rule over it.”
Note · Translation Se’et is “a lifting,” of the face or of the gift. The word is not more specific than that. The desire in the next sentence is the same word used of the woman in the previous chapter.
Notice and discuss
Read each passage, then think about the question on your own or talk it over with others. No answers are collected.
-
What does Yahweh ask Cain about his brother, and how does Cain answer him?
Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
-
What does Cain tell Yahweh about his punishment, and what does he say anyone who finds him will do?
Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can carry. Look, you have driven me out today from the face of the ground, and from your face I will be hidden. I will be a wanderer and a fugitive on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
Note · Translation Avon is both the crime and the punishment that follows it. “Punishment” is printed. “Guilt” is the live alternative.
-
What reason does Seth’s mother give for his name, and what do people begin to do after Enosh is born?
Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “for God has set another offspring for me in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.” To Seth, he too, a son was born, and he named him Enosh. Then people began to call on the name of Yahweh.
Note · Translation From here the copy uses Adam as the man’s name, not only “the human.” Seth, Shet, sits next to shat, “he has set.”
Note · Translation Huhal is printed as “began,” the passive of the verb “to begin.” A different verb with the same letters can mean “was profaned.” That reading is not printed.
