The chapter opens with

Yahweh spoke to Aaron: Wine and intoxicating drink you shall not drink, you and your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, and you shall not die. It is a lasting statute through your generations, and to make a separation between the holy and the ordinary, and between the unclean and the clean, and to teach the sons of Israel all the statutes that Yahweh has spoken to them by the hand of Moses. Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons who were left: Take the grain gift that is left from the food gifts of Yahweh and eat it unleavened beside the altar, because it is a most holy thing. You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your due and your sons’ due from the food gifts of Yahweh, for so I was commanded. The breast of the raised offering and the thigh of the contribution you shall eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you, because they have been given as your due and your sons’ due from the sacrifices of well-being of the sons of Israel. The thigh of the contribution and the breast of the raised offering they shall bring, along with the food gifts of the fats, to raise as a raised offering before Yahweh. It shall be yours and your sons’ with you as a lasting due, as Yahweh has commanded.

Leviticus 10:8–15 (KoS)

Note · Translation Shekhar is an intoxicating drink. It is not given a second name such as beer.

Note · Translation Chol is ordinary, what is not set apart. It is not “profane” as an insult.

Notice and discuss

Read each passage, then think about the question on your own or talk it over with others. No answers are collected.

  1. Where does Moses tell Aaron and his sons to stay for seven days, and what are they to keep?

Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, Boil the meat at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and eat it there, and the bread that is in the basket of installation, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it. What is left of the meat and of the bread you shall burn in fire. You shall not go out from the entrance of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the day that the days of your installation are fulfilled, because for seven days he shall fill your hand. As he did on this day, Yahweh commanded to be done, to make atonement for you. At the entrance of the tent of meeting you shall sit day and night for seven days, and you shall keep the watch of Yahweh, and you shall not die, because so I was commanded. Aaron and his sons did all the things that Yahweh had commanded by the hand of Moses.

    Leviticus 8:31–36 (KoS)

Note · Text Leningrad writes “as I commanded.” The first person is printed. No other reading was substituted.

  2. What do all the people do when fire comes out and consumes the offering on the altar?

Aaron lifted his hand toward the people and blessed them, and he came down from making the offense offering, the whole offering, and the sacrifices of well-being. Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, came out, and blessed the people, and the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the people. Fire came out from before Yahweh and consumed the whole offering and the fats on the altar. All the people saw, they shouted, and they fell on their faces.

    Leviticus 9:22–24 (KoS)

Note · Text The written consonants are ידו, “his hand.” The Masoretic reading is ידיו, “his hands.” The written form is printed.

  3. How does Aaron answer Moses when Moses is angry that the offense offering was burned instead of eaten?

The goat of the offense offering Moses searched and searched, and look, it had been burned. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron who were left, saying, Why did you not eat the offense offering in the holy place? It is a most holy thing, and he gave it to you to carry the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before Yahweh. Look, its blood was not brought into the holy place, inside. You should have eaten it, eaten it, in the holy place, as I commanded. Aaron spoke to Moses, Look, today they brought their offense offering and their whole offering before Yahweh, and things like these have met me. If I had eaten an offense offering today, would it have been good in Yahweh’s eyes? Moses heard, and it was good in his eyes.
